Engaging Indigenous Knowledge in the IPCC

Reflections from the Diverse Knowledge Systems Meeting

Carol Zavaleta-Cortijo

The Diverse Knowledge Systems meeting was a valuable opportunity to connect with IPCC authors who are actively working to ensure effective and equitable engagement of Indigenous Knowledge holders. I attended and shared my experience as part of the Indigenous Knowledge and Local Knowledge (IK and LK) Task Force during the GEO-7 process.

I was very happy to reconnect with our colleague Jyoti from the Keystone Foundation and an IPON member, who also attended the meeting as an expert. I felt a strong sense of connection and experienced a unique space to meet other Indigenous scholars from North America, Australia, Asia, and Latin America.

We shared family stories, food stories, and scientific stories. It was a unique space and, for me, a moment of celebration and gratitude — to be able to bring our expertise and ways of thinking into these global spaces.
